What are Common Problems with Lincoln Aviator?

Your Aviator is a mid-size luxury SUV with a ride unlike any other, unmistakably Lincoln. Maintaining it, in the tradition to which you've become accustomed -- it's well worth the investment. There're a few issues you might run into from time to time; here's what to look for, and what to do about it.

Cracked Liftgate Trim

Trim on the liftgate damaged? It's a known cosmetic issue with the applique. Aviator models from 2003, 2004, and 2005, with under 100,000 miles on the odometer usually, can have it. As it's basically a crack, you'll want to replace it; there's no fixing it as-is.

Stuck Shifters

If your shift lever's not moving, you've either got a bad brake switch, or the mechanism in the gear lever's broken. Aviator models from between '03 and '05, with a little over 100,000 miles clocked on average, can have the problem. Usually, if it's not the one, it's the other; it'll have to be replaced.

PCV System Leaks

When the Check Engine turns on, especially in Aviator models from 2003 or later with around 100,000 miles, most often, it's because of a vacuum leak from the positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) valve's grommet. What's happened is the molded rubber hose might've cracked and collapsed; this is pretty much certain if the SUV's started to run roughly. You'll have to replace the hose.
