OEM Ford Alternators Online
Everything You Need to Know About Your Factory Alternator
What it is. One of the three parts of your vehicle's charging system. The other two are the car battery and a voltage regulator.
What it does. Charges the vehicle's battery and powers its many electrical systems. It does so by turning mechanical energy into electrical energy -- in other words, by turning the movement of parts into electricity. It doesn't only light up the instrumentation, either; it also runs things like the power windows, electronics, steering system, and windshield wipers.
How it works. The process is as follows. First, the engine moves the serpentine belt and drive belts. They then move a pulley attached to the alternator. The pulley moves a rotor shaft, and this shaft turns a set of magnetic coils. The process generates a magnetic field -- AC power, to be more specific. This power, a rectifier on the alternator captures; it turns it into DC power, which the voltage regulator manages.
What causes one to fail. Generally, degraded parts, an overtightened belt, installing incompatible accessories, and jump-starting your vehicle incorrectly. Failure may happen with little to no warning, too. However, there are some symptoms you can look for.
The signs it's going bad. Your car lighting may malfunction, along with electronics like the radio. Warnings for the battery and alternator may illuminate on the instrumentation. Your engine may start to squeak, your battery may die, and alternator fluid may start to leak. You may even smell of something burning around the battery or alternator. In such cases, an inspection is required. Follow it up with an immediate test of your vehicle's charging system. Be sure to replace any parts that any of the results recommend.
When to replace one. Every 7 years or every 80,000 miles, at least -- whichever comes first. Don't wait to change it any longer than 150,000 miles. Review your owner's manual's maintenance schedule for more specifics.
How to install a new one. Consult your owner's documentation or the manufacturer's instructions. Generally, though, it's as straightforward as disconnecting the battery, detaching some wires, moving a tensioner pulley, removing some bolts, taking off the old one, and putting in the new. Before ordering any alternator, though, be sure it's genuine.
Why buy genuine OEM vs. aftermarket. The alternators Ford designs for Lincoln, Mercury, and its own models are compatible with them specifically. That's not always the case with aftermarket brands.
