All About Ford Shift Knobs
Whatever you call the shift knob in your Ford vehicle -- a gear shift, a shifter, or a stick shift -- it's critical to helping you control the transmission, and thus, control the drive.
If your ride -- take the 2013 Ford F-150, for instance -- has, say an automatic six-speed transmission, the knob makes transitioning between park, reverse, and drive easier. If the assembly's a manual, though, the knob makes controlling gear changes relative to engine rpm easier.
Either can take many forms. Some Ford shift knobs feature a gear pattern on top, for instance -- handy for manual transmissions. Others bear logos, others yet can be made of simple plastic or metal, and others come wrapped in everything from premium leather to no-frills vinyl. Aluminum shifters, for another example, can add a stylish touch to the interior of, say, a 2007 Ford Focus in need of a little customization.
Whether your gear shifter is faded, worn out, or broken, or you simply want a change of style, replacing the knob is easy. For most automatic transmissions, just tighten a new one onto the shift rod with the couple small screws. For a manual Ford shifter, just thread the new one onto the shift rod. Here's the process, for most cases.
- Put the emergency brake on and shift the car into neutral.
- Take off the old knob; you can either use a wrench or unscrew it manually, counterclockwise.
- Screw the new knob on directly (or fit it using any adapter required).
Just know your old knob's thread diameter before buying a new one -- that way, you'll be able to find a new one that fits just right. Your best bet: an OEM replacement.
