All About Ford Floor Mats

Replacing car floor carpets can run $1,000 plus. No Ford owner should have to deal with that kind of bill. Replacing torn or crumpled floor mats before they let dirt and muck damage the floors, though -- that's a lot cheaper: usually, tens of dollars, or a few hundred, tops.

After that, the best way to keep replacement costs down: take care of the mats; clean them weekly to monthly. Here's how to do that, whether you've got carpet floor mats, all-weather, or custom-molded.

Carpeted Floor Mats

  1. Take the mats out of the car and shake out any dirt and debris.
  2. Vacuum both sides of the mats. If they're wet, use a Shop-Vac to cut the moisture.
  3. Scrub the mats with either soap and water, oxygen bleach and water, or a commercial spray-on carpet cleaner to get rid of any stains. Follow any manufacturer instructions.
  4. Dry the mats completely and replace them in the car.

Rubber/Vinyl Floor Mats

  1. Remove the mats from your vehicle and spray or wash off any muck. Use a garden hose or a bucket of soap and water, plus a scrub brush. Avoid harsh rubber-damaging chemicals, and don't spray the mats with silicone, as it can make them slippery.
  2. Hang the mats to drip-dry or wipe them off with a towel. Let them dry out completely. Then, put them back in the car.

If you need to install floor liners along with the mats, though (like, say, you might have to in a Ford F-150), it can be tricky. Get in touch with a Ford dealer if you're not sure how to do it.
