What are Some Common Problems with Mercury Villager?

Your Villager was one of the best investments in a family minivan you ever made -- and not just because of how affordable it was. It's reliable, roomy, it handles well as an office commuter -- it's everything you'd come to expect from Mercury. Stay on top of regular service, and it should run a good couple hundred-thousand miles.

Good thing you came to us for advice on how best to do that. There's a few problems the line has; here's what to watch out for, and what to do about it.

Faulty Distributors

If your engine's stalling or not starting at all, there's a good chance the distributor has rusted out, seized up, and gone bad. This was a known issue for Villager models from between 1993 and 2002, those with around 150,000 miles on the odometer these days. There's no real fixing it; it'll have to be replaced.

Bad Fuel Injectors

If your Villager is from between '93 and '02, it's got around 130,000 miles on it, and you're having trouble driving it, most likely, you've got a fuel injector problem. More specifically, a connector's probably corroded, but the issue can also be that one's clogged and impossible to clean, or that some part of it has failed. You'll have to replace it.

Not sure how to go about that? Your best bet's to schedule a service appointment with a Ford dealer. (The brand owns the Mercury nameplate.)

Failed Exhaust Manifolds

Hearing ticking when the engine's cold? Often, that's a case of the exhaust manifold having warped and cracked, and the studs between the cylinder head and the manifold itself breaking off. This was a known issue with 1993-2002 Villager models (those with around 160,000 miles or so now). Replace them (or replace the manifold), and you should be good to go.
