What are Some Less Common Problems with Mercury Topaz?

Faulty fuel pumps, bad transmissions, failed engine mounts -- they've all given your Topaz trouble on and off over the years. But they weren't anything some know-how and a quick fix couldn't handle.

Now that the reliable, fuel-efficient, and easy-driving Mercury you love is back on the road, it should be good to go another decade or two, maybe even another hundred-thousand miles. That is -- unless you run into some of the more uncommon problems the car can have. Luckily, you came to us here at Ford OEM Parts Direct about them.

Here's a few your Topaz might have, and, should worse come to worst, what to do.

1. Faulty ECUs

Topaz models from between 1990 and 1994 have known issues where their engines perform poorly, stalling and hesitating when speeding up. If you're having this trouble, most likely, it's because of a bad engine control unit (ECU) -- more specifically, one with outdated software. You'll have to replace the ECU to get the programming the car's computer needs.

2. Failed Fuel Pressure Regulators

If your Topaz is one of those that ran from '90 to '94, and it's got similar engine problems -- it's idling poorly, stalling, or feeding back error codes about having too rich a fuel mixture -- there's a good chance the fuel pressure regulator has gone bad -- more specifically, ruptured. There's no repairing the regulator; it'll need to be replaced.

3. Bad Heater Blower Motors

If you're driving an early-1990s Topaz and its HVAC is ticking when you run the heater, the culprit's blower motor failure. Replace the motor, and you'll be good to go.
