How to Mod Your Mercury Cougar Like it's 1967

Your Cougar. Its forebears were siblings to the ultimate muscle car borne of the 1960s, the Ford Mustang. They were, however, pony cars in the Mercury tradition -- in contrast, more about comfort and luxury than adrenaline-fueled thrills.

The wild card, though: the 1967 Mercury Cougar. If you know it, you're likely inspired by it, and here shopping OEM parts and accessories to help you get its look and feel. You're in luck; we carry plenty, and for less. Better yet, a lot of update projects, you can DIY easy, without much help from a Ford dealer.

Here's a couple to start with.

1. Upgrade its Performance

The 1967 Cougar had a trio of beastly engines. One, a 4.7-liter V8 capable of 200 horsepower. Another, a four-cylinder that got 225. The last, a 6.4-liter Marauder V8 that shelled out a hard-charging 320.

By 2002, though, the only engines offered were a 2.0-liter four-cylinder and an optional 2.5-liter V6, both naturally aspirated. The former got 125 horsepower, and the latter, 170 horsepower. In other words, if you drive a newer model, the car could probably use a power bump.

The best way to get a few extra horses and pound-feet of torque: add a turbocharger (or better, a supercharger); that way, more air gets pulled into the engine. Follow up with a cold air intake and a performance engine air filter, and you'll get cooler, better-quality air. The result: better combustion -- and a richer burn means more power.

2. Deck Out its Interior

Back in the day, '67 included, Cougar featured many perks ahead of the time -- vinyl bucket seating, a Sports Console (what was then the center console), a padded dashboard, a wood three-spoke deep-dish steering wheel, and more. They've certainly got the vintage feel, but these days, they're a tad dated; you've got plenty of room for improvement (no pun intended on the longer chassis, and so, somewhat more spacious cabin, than Mustang).

That means installing modern seats, updating the dash, trading up for the latest steering wheel, you name it; check out our selection, and you'll find comparable upgrades. The best finishing touches: seat covers, plus interior car covers for electronics upgrades; they'll help protect your investment.
