What are Common Problems with Lincoln MKS?

Your MKS is the quintessential Lincoln luxury sedan -- capable, comfortable, well-appointed; in short, a pleasure to drive. The model wasn't without a few problems during its run between 2009 and 2016, though. Here are some that you might run into from time to time, and what to do about them.

Malfunctioning Electronics

If the radio, for instance, runs noisy or doesn't work right, or you have other issues, there's a good chance one of its modules needs either reprogramming or a software update. You're more likely to have this problem if your MKS is a model from 2015 or earlier, with an average of 75,000 miles on the odometer. If the fix doesn't work, consider replacing the electronics.

Bad Brake Rotors and Pads

If the front brakes in your MKS are grunting or grinding, it's likely because of abnormal brake rotor and brake pad wear, itself the result of bad anchor brackets on the front brake calipers. This is especially the case for some models from 2009 or later, with around 60,000 miles clocked on average. You'll have to replace the brackets with revised parts.

Leaky Axle

Driving an '09 or later MKS, with 90,000 miles or so on it? If your axle's got fluid on it, it's from either the transmission or the power transfer unit (PTU). (Red fluid is from the former, and brown fluid, from the latter.) Moreover, it's usually coming from either the axle seal or the PTU cover seal -- sometimes, both. There's no real fixing them; they'll need to be replaced.
